Swimming, hiking and savouring rice
On the Costa Blanca, alternate sandy beaches and coves: Playa de Levante in Benidorm, the salty waters of the Laguna Rosa in Torrevieja, or the calas at the foot of the Peñón de Ifach in Calp, which you can climb for the view over the bay. In Valencia itself, explore the City of Arts and Sciences, the central market and the Turia gardens, a former riverbed turned into a promenade. The Castellón hinterland and the Sierra de Bernia are perfect for hiking in the cool of the day.
At the table, taste the original paella valenciana, arròs a banda and horchata de chufa. Spring and autumn offer the best conditions; the Fallas light up Valencia every March.
Where to stay
In the province of Alicante and in Torrevieja, you'll enjoy a lively seaside base, handy for exploring the neighbouring resorts. Calp charms with its rock and its fish restaurants, while Alicante combines its port, the Santa Bárbara castle and its old town.
In Valencia, a city apartment puts beaches and monuments within reach. For more peace and quiet, the province of Valencia, Castellón and the village of Barxeta open onto the orange groves and the interior. Which airport should I use to reach the region?
Two airports serve the area: Alicante-Elche, ideal for Torrevieja, Calpe and the Costa Blanca, and Valencia, for the city and inland areas. Allow about 40 minutes from Alicante to Torrevieja. A car is recommended to explore between beaches, coves and the Castellón countryside.
What's the best time to visit?
Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant temperatures for combining swimming and hiking. Summer remains very hot and busy along the coast. If you're heading to Valencia, note that Las Fallas set the city ablaze every March, with heavy crowds and accommodations booked well in advance.
Which area should I choose for my stay?
For a lively beach base, head to Alicante province or Torrevieja, close to neighboring resorts. Calpe draws visitors with its Peñón de Ifach and seafood restaurants. Alicante blends a harbor with an old town. For a quieter stay, choose Valencia province or Castellón, known for their orange groves.
