Hiking, diving and tasting the island
Walk the GR20, known to be demanding, or take gentler sections such as the Mare a Mare. Swimming enthusiasts head for Palombaggia and Santa Giulia, near Porto-Vecchio, or for the coves of the Gulf of Porto, listed by UNESCO, with the calanques of Piana and the Scandola Reserve.
In Ajaccio, the Maison Bonaparte and the covered market set the tone. On the flavour side, count on mountain charcuterie, brocciu, Patrimonio wine and the clementine orchards in autumn. From Bastia, Cap Corse unrolls its harbours and its trails perched above the sea.
Where to set down your bags
Ajaccio, our largest base, blends city life, beaches and boat departures to the Sanguinaires. Porto-Vecchio and the neighbouring south (Grosseto-Prugna, Pietrosella, Olmeto) give access to the finest beaches and to the maquis. In the north, Corbara opens onto the Balagne and its villages, while Bastia and Linguizzetta serve the east coast and its long stretches of sand.

How do you get to Corsica, and do you need a car?
Four airports serve the island: Ajaccio, Bastia, Calvi and Figari. Ferries also connect Marseille, Toulon and Nice to Corsican ports, with or without a vehicle. Once there, a car is highly recommended: mountain roads are winding and beaches are often poorly served by public transport.
What is the best time to visit?
July and August offer warm sea temperatures but also crowds and high prices. May, June and September are milder, perfect for swimming as well as the GR20 trail. In autumn, clementine orchards ripen. In winter, the mountainous interior is well suited to off-season hiking, in peace and quiet.
Which area should you choose depending on your stay?
For southern beaches like Palombaggia and Santa Giulia, aim for Porto-Vecchio, Lecci or Grosseto-Prugna. La Balagne, around Corbara and Algajola, combines hilltop villages and coves. Bastia and Cap Corse suit fans of coastal hiking, while Moltifao opens onto the mountainous interior.
Is air conditioning common, and is summer bearable?
Corsican summers are hot, especially along the southern coast where temperatures often exceed 30°C. Not all rentals are air-conditioned: 59 have air conditioning. If you’re traveling in July or August, check for this feature when booking to sleep comfortably.
