Swimming, sailing and walking along the cliffs
Start with the beaches: Praia da Rocha in Portimão and its rock formations, the long Praia da Falésia lined with red cliffs near Olhos de Água, or the coves of Albufeira. A boat trip from Portimão or Alvor leads to the Benagil sea caves, spectacular in late morning.
Inland, the Loulé market (Saturday morning) overflows with fruit, almonds and fish. Golfers will find plenty around Vilamoura and Quarteira. Finally, the Ria Formosa, between lagoons and sandbanks, can be explored on foot or by kayak. Summer is hot and lively; spring and autumn stay mild and far quieter.
Where to stay
Portimão and neighbouring Alvor suit active seaside stays, just steps from the beaches and the port. Olhos de Água and Albufeira offer a resort atmosphere, with old quarters and seafront restaurants. Quarteira lines up its seafront and fishmongers' markets. For a more relaxed pace, Loulé and Quelfes retain an authentic character, away from the coast.
