Set aside a morning at low tide to reach Mont-Saint-Michel, then follow the D-Day beaches from Omaha Beach to Arromanches and its American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. On the Alabaster Coast, the cliffs of Étretat and their arches are best walked at the end of the day, when the light softens.
The resorts of the Côte Fleurie — Cabourg, Villers-sur-Mer with its Vaches Noires fossil beach, Deauville — lend themselves to long strolls along the boardwalks. On the flavour side, push open the doors of the markets for camembert, pont-l'évêque and cider from the Pays d'Auge, and taste calvados at a producer's. Your own kitchen makes it easy to cook seafood brought back from the harbour.
Where to set down your bags in Normandy
In the Cotentin, Cherbourg-en-Cotentin and Port-Bail-sur-Mer give access to wild beaches and to the Cité de la Mer. Pontorson serves as an ideal base camp for Mont-Saint-Michel, just a few kilometres away.
